The residential care workforce holds a diverse range of qualifications that are relevant to working with vulnerable children and young people. As part of the Residential Care Workers Vocational Education and Training Initiative, a top up skills course is being delivered for workers who hold a recognised relevant qualification. The provision of a top up skills course, which covers trauma, working in residential care and managing behaviour, ensures a baseline of core skills and knowledge for all residential care workers across Victoria.
There are no barriers to entry based on age (other than post school students over 16), gender, social or educational background. Students need to be able bodied and have the physical capacity to undertake the practical application of the program.
Student should have foundation skills at the ACSF levels listed below. This is tested during our Pre-training review. Each student is required to complete the Language, Literacy & Numeracy assessment to determine what level they are currently working at & if they are suitable to proceed with this qualification. Where students do not have skills, they may be provided with additional support to develop their literacy and numeracy skills to this level if appropriate, or alternatively they will be provided information on other more appropriate courses.
Learners are required to comply with Evidence of enrolments at the time of enrolment at time of enrolment with ONCALL Training College. Students are required to provide appropriate forms of IDs to confirm their eligibility to enroll in this course. Students are required to apply for unique student identification (USI) number while their study period in Australia and this information will be handed to the students at the time of orientation. This qualification requires a basic understanding and use of computers and the internet. Support will be provided as required to develop the students’ skills.
From 1 January 2018 all residential care workers providing direct care in a residential care home funded or delivered by the Department of Health and Human Services (the department) are required to hold, or be undertaking, either:
Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention (Residential and out of home care), including a mandatory trauma unit of competency; or
a recognised relevant qualification, plus completion of a short top up skills course.
The minimum qualification requirement sets a benchmark to ensure all residential care workers have a common level of residential care specific skills and knowledge.
The minimum qualification applies to all workers (full time, part time or casual) who provide direct care to children and young people in residential care.

CHCMHS007 – Work effectively in trauma informed care
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of trauma informed care within a service.
CHCPRT010 – Work with children and young people with complex trauma and attachment issues and needs
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise indicators of trauma in children and young people of different ages and at different stages, and to identify their needs and those of their parents and carers.
Residential specialty units
CHCPRT009 – Provide primary residential care
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide for the care and support of clients in residential care and assist their transition from primary/residential care.
CHCCCS009 – Facilitate responsible behaviour
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor individuals, respond to behaviours of concern, deal with conflict and support responsibility for behaviour management and change.
Further training pathways from this qualification include, but are not limited to, Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention, Diploma of Youth Justice, University Level study, including Bachelors and Post Graduate Programs.
6 full day workshops (plus work placement of 40 hours)
6 Workshops, 8.45am – 4.30pm delivered weekly.
This course will be delivered at our newly renovated training facilities using a blended delivery methodology. The blended methodology employed by ONCALL Training College will include an intensive face to face classroom training session including a theoretical and practical component along with on-line and self-study.
