Top Up Skills Course For Residential Care Workers

Course Outline

The residential care workforce holds a diverse range of qualifications that are relevant to working with vulnerable children and young people.

As part of the Residential Care Workers Vocational Education and Training Initiative, a top up skills course is being delivered for workers who hold a recognised relevant qualification.

The provision of a top up skills course, which covers trauma, working in residential care and managing behaviour, ensures a baseline of core skills and knowledge for all residential care workers across Victoria.

Assessment Mode: Online theory questions and practical tasks performed under supervison, undertaken in a suitable workplace

Duration: 5 weeks (2 online classes per week) + 12 weeks to allow the completion of your practical assessment tasks in the workplace

Course Details

  • Workplace Requirements

    You must have a suitable workplace that will allow you to undertake the tasks prescribed in this course.

    That workplace must have a supervisor that is suitably experiences and qualified to supervise you when you perform these tasks.

    You can discuss this with your trainer at the initial consultation

    Under no circumstances are students to be doing tasks in the workplace unsupervised.

    Admission Requirements:

    There are no barriers to entry based on age (other than post school students over 16), gender, social or educational background. Students need to be able bodied and have the physical capacity to undertake the practical application of the program.

    Students should have foundation skills at the ACSF levels listed below. This is tested during our Pre-training review. Each student is required to complete the Language, Literacy & Numeracy assessment to determine what level they are currently working at & if they are suitable to proceed with this qualification. Where students do not have skills, they may be provided with additional support to develop their literacy and numeracy skills to this level if appropriate, or alternatively they will be provided information on other more appropriate courses.

    USI Requirements:

    Learners are required to comply with Evidence of enrolments at the time of enrolment at time of enrolment with ONCALL Training College. Students are required to provide appropriate forms of IDs to confirm their eligibility to enroll in this course. Students are required to apply for a unique student identification (USI) number while their study period in Australia and this information will be handed to the students at the time of orientation.

    IT Requirements:

    This qualification requires a basic understanding and use of computers and the internet. All students must have access to a computer as resources and assessment tasks must be completed online. Good internet connection is required and access to a camera and microphone. Support will be provided as required to develop the students’ skills.

    • Part of the application process, your trainer will need to interview you to determine your suitability and to verify the workplace where you will do your practical tasks. Once you register for the course arrangements are then made for the phone interview.

    • Recognition of Prior Learning is available.

    Steps:

    1. Read the Entry Requirements

    2. Self determine that you meet the Entry Requirements

    3. Register online, having the required supporting documents ready (ID documents and USI number)

    4. Trainer will contact you to arrange for an initial consultation to determine eligibility

    5. Students advises workplace and supervisor at initial consultation and Trainer confirms

    6. Pay Fees or apply for Payment Plan

    7. Trainer commences training with orientation

    8. Online webinars conclude after five (5) weeks

    9. Student completes the required tasks in the workplace with Third Party reports being signed off by the Supervisor

    10. Statement of Attainment is issued for the four Units of Competency for the course.

  • How Do I Learn?

    • 2 webinars per week

    • Wednesdays and Thursdays for 5 weeks

    • Each webinar is from 5:30pm – 8:30pm

    Assessment:

    • Online theory questions

    • Third party observations by a suitably experienced and qualified supervisor in a suitable workplace that provides sufficient scope for you to undertake a range of tasks. Your preliminary meeting with your trainer before you enrol is to confirm these requirements

  • Trauma informed care units

    CHCMHS007 – Work effectively in trauma informed care

    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of trauma informed care within a service.

    CHCPRT034 – Work with children and young people with complex trauma and attachment issues and needs

    This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise indicators of trauma in children and young people of different ages and at different stages, and to identify their needs and those of their families and carers.

    Residential specialty units

    CHCPRT033 – Provide support to children and youth in out-of-home care

    This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide for the care and support of children and young people in residential care and assist their transition from primary or residential care.

    CHCCCS009 – Facilitate responsible behaviour

    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor individuals, respond to behaviours of concern, deal with conflict and support responsibility for behaviour management and change.

  • Course Structure:

    • 5 weeks for online learning with two (2) webinars per week

    • Maximum of 12 weeks (3 months) to allows sufficient time to complete the assessment tasks in a workplace, under supervision. Third Party Reports must be submitted to your trainer before the expiry of the 12 weeks as it may incur additional fees

    Minimum qualification for residential care

    From 1 January 2018 all residential care workers providing direct care in a residential care home funded or delivered by the Department of Health and Human Services (the department) are required to hold, or be undertaking, either:

    • Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention (Residential and out of home care), including a mandatory trauma unit of competency; or

    • a recognised relevant qualification, plus completion of a short top up skills course.

    The minimum qualification requirement sets a benchmark to ensure all residential care workers have a common level of residential care specific skills and knowledge.

    The minimum qualification applies to all workers (full time, part time or casual) who provide direct care to children and young people in residential care.

    The provision of a short top up skills course for workers with a recognised relevant qualification, which covers trauma, working in residential care, and managing behaviour, ensures a baseline of core skills and knowledge for all residential care workers statewide.

  • This course consists of National Units of Competency and is Government accredited.

  • Further training pathways from this qualification include, but are not limited to:

    • Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention

    • Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention

    • Diploma of Youth Justice

    • University-level study, including Bachelors and Post Graduate Programs.

    • The maximum payment plan offered is six (6) equal payments of $200, totaling $1,200.

    • Additional Administration Fee of $300 is payable should submission of assessments fall outside the maximum of 17 weeks
